Travis “Hapa” Browne is a top 10 heavyweight in the UFC and an athlete I’ve trained for a couple years now. He lives here in San Diego between fights and heads out to New Mexico to work at Jackson’s MMA for his fight camps.
Because of this arrangement, our training programs are a bit different than most of the MMA athletes I work with. Typically, I’m working with guys for 8 weeks right up until their fight. We get a couple weeks of “foundational strength training” and then get into “fight specific strength training” and conditioning work to have them peaked for their fight. With Travis, we focus a bit more on the foundational strength since we are training more in his “off-season”. Most sessions include some of my favorite foundational lifts (squats, deadlifts, pullups, presses), some plyometric work, and plenty of mobility drills and core work.
Once a week, we meet at the local park for an outdoor session. I’ll bring a couple bells and a med ball, and we are good to go. Earlier this year, we sat down after a session and I asked him for his thoughts on strength training. Check it out.
